Review:

I'd like to know how the author defines a romance. Based on the book, if two people end up together, it’s a romance, in much the same way a Shakespearean play that does not end in tragedy is considered a comedy.

In this case, a Dom, John, decides to look for a sub. He advertises an online dating list for a submissive who isn't sure she is one. The author calls this book "a "how to" book featuring the methodology and psychology used by John. The tactics he uses in his careful hunt for his ideal submissive female is a blueprint for how to recruit and train a sub."

The problem is while we see how John thinks, we never really see how he feels. He's incredibly manipulative, working very hard to push Curi (short for Curious) into the lifestyle. He came across as cold, calculating and pompous. Curi was better, smart and willing to explore, but again, we see how she thinks more than how she feels.

This entire book felt more clinical than romantic. The only plot was whether or not John could convince Curi to become what he wants her to be and how she would react to a "play party" with John's friends.

Expect impact play, a brush with anal play, bondage, hot wax, and exhibitionism.

Swagger is the story of a former high school girlfriend and boyfriend who are finally reunited after nine years apart. She has no idea where he's been for so long and is mystified by his sudden return. He had dropped off the face of the earth one day after being dragged from the school bus in handcuffs. He's reluctant to burden her with the tragic details of his crappy life. Little does he know, her life has its share of tragic and crappy, too. In other words, this book has all the makings for a match made in either heaven or hell.

I wanted to love this book. The title is great. The opening flashback image of totally hot high school dream Cruz walking down the bus aisle toward his girl Roxie really jumpstarted the story. The name of the motel Roxie's dad named after her is even cute: Motel on the Rox. But unfortunately there were a number of issues that were hard to overlook.

First off, the book caused whiplash from switching back and forth between past and present tense seemingly at random. It wasn't that there were frequent flashbacks or anything; there was simply a mishmash of verb tenses in practically every paragraph. Speaking of whiplash, the chapters switched back and forth between the perspectives of Roxie and her cool dude Cruz. Both stories were told in first person, and if a reader wasn't paying close attention to a switch in perspective, it was easy to lose track of whose thoughts you were listening in on.

From a story perspective, this book is based on the improbable premise that an incredibly hot guy has been obsessed with a girl he knew from high school for the past nine years. He never contacted her during that time; he just thought about her. A lot. To a downright disturbing level, in fact. It's equally improbable that no one in this small town knew what happened the day of Cruz's arrest or what happened to him afterward. Small towns simply don't work like that.

This book would have been improved by more careful editing, as well as backgrounds for the main characters that weren't quite so depressing. Conflict is one thing, but when you throw everything from PTSD to alcoholism to child abuse to sexual abuse to suicide at characters, it feels overloaded. And for sure include more focus on Cruz's swagger, because that was a high point of the book.

Deep Enough To Bleed by Margie Church is the emotional journey of Jolene Parks as she learns to find her way in life after the physical abuse her father puts her and her brother Adam through. Not only does she have to suffer through the abuse but she has to deal with the fact that her loving grandmother sacrifices her freedom when she kills her son for the abuse he has put his children through. And so begins Jolene’s journey into adulthood and not on a very good note. Eighteen months after or so after she graduates high school enters the man who will help to change her life. But will Brendan help her overcome all of her fears and help her to love unconditionally? Will he be able to help her see that she will not repeat her father’s sins?

Margie Church takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster that has the reader smiling, laughing, and crying. This story will bring tears to the eyes in many different sections as she tells the story of one very emotionally scarred person’s story. Not only does the story have a great deal of back story to it so that the characters seem to come to life but Margie Church touches on a rather taboo topic that needs to be talked about more often and that is the life of a cutter and why the person cuts. Margie Church sheds light on this topic in an eloquent way without making the topic scarier than it already is. Kudos to you Margie this is a topic near and dear to this reviewer’s heart.

All in all the story is very well written and keeps the reader’s attention with a couple of different storylines going on that tie back into Jolene’s story. Though the story does not end with a totally happy ending the ending does the story well but if you want to know how it ends you will have to read it to find out. So once again kudos to Margie Church for a very well written story and thank you for sharing your talents with us. This story receives an astounding five out of five! And a special note for the content on the cutting thank you Margie for sharing this very important story with us.

Shit.

I reach my trembling fingers down and feel the sticky wax between my legs. I rub the strip back over the wax, hoping it’ll stick this time, to no avail. 

This isn’t happening. Please, this can’t possibly be happening. 

I reach for the package the wax came in and with it in my hand. I sit on the toilet lid, reading to see if there’s any emergency instructions. Nope. Nada. 

Maybe warm water. I go to stand up to run a warm bath, but am barely able to inch upward. 

I’m stuck to the toilet lid! With my hands on my face, I start to laugh until tears pour out of my eyes. I’ve glued myself to the damn toilet! 

“Hayley!” I yell through my hands and tremble in laughter when she peeks in. 

“What is it, babe?” She rushes to my side with worry seeping through her pores, which causes me to laugh harder. She rubs her hand over my back trying to console me until I can contain myself. 

“I’m not crying.” I wipe the tears from my face and she arches her eyebrows at me. “Okay, I am crying, but I’m fine. Or I will be. I just need your help.” 

I explain my dilemma to her, and within seconds she is lying by my side on the floor in hysterics. At least I keep my life amusing. 

“Okay,” she breathes. “Okay. Maybe the package.” She picks it up, but I tell her I’ve already read through it. “Did you follow the instructions?” 

“I let it cool down a bit too much I think,” I admit. “Maybe if I run a warm bath it’ll come off.” 

“So we just need to get you off the toilet.” 

I nod. “First run the bath.” 

“We need a first aid kit. Just in case.” 

“Right.” 

A first aid kit. For my inner butt. I should probably blog about this. 

Hayley leaves me as she searches for my stash of antiseptic and band aids. Maybe she’ll find my pride along with it. 

She returns quickly with a handful of crap and a big grin on her face. “You’re tweeting about this, aren’t you?” 

I shrug. “No such thing as TMI on social media.” 

Hayley puts her hand under my arm and we nod at each other. “Count of three,” she whispers. “One, two, three.” 

With her help, I stand up hard, taking the toilet lid with me. Well at least I’m no longer stuck to the whole toilet. 

Hayley looks at me, and I’m afraid I’m going to burst into real tears. I have a toilet lid stuck to my ass. 

“Well, there’s a fashion statement.” Hayley grins, and I gently sit back down with my new appendage.

 “Think Adam will notice?” I smile back. 

“He’ll probably think you’ve been swiping fast food when he’s not looking.” 

“What am I gonna do, Hayley?” I half-laugh, half-cry into my hands.

“I have an idea.”

I follow her into my bedroom and hold onto the bed frame as instructed while I wait for her to pull the lid off. 

“Count of three?” she asks and I shake my head. 

“Surprise me.” I close my eyes and grip my bed tightly. 

Surprise me she does when she yanks the lid clean off, breaking it into two pieces, and lands on her butt. I’m too tired to yell from the pain, but manage a few giggles when I see my friend holding the broken lid triumphantly over her head like some warped version of the Incredible Hulk. 

I reach between my legs again and whimper when I feel the glue still there. 

“That’s what the warm water’s for,” she reminds me. 

“But what if I get stuck to the bottom of the tub?” 

“Don’t let your ass touch the bottom, stupid.” 

“I’m not the one holding two broken pieces of a dirty toilet, asshole.” 

Hayley drops the lid with a hard thud and glares at me. “Who glued themselves to that same toilet, dipshit?” 

“You girls okay?” Max calls through the door. 

“Yes,” we sing in unison and start to laugh once again. 

“Warm bath.” I nod, hoping I remember not to let my ass touch the bottom. 

“You want a wash cloth?” she asks, but then laughs, probably picturing it stuck to me as well. 

I step into the tub on weak knees and exhale slowly as I get ready to not quite sit in the tub.

“Oil!” Hayley exclaims, pulling me out of my tub. She reaches for the box and dumps the rest of the contents on my bathroom countertop, squealing when the small tube of oil falls out. 

“I’m an idiot.” 

“World class jackass,” she agrees. 

“Out.” I push her towards the door but she plops herself on the floor adamant to see the grand finale of this performance.

I glare at her without much vehemence. I’m far too excited to see if the oil will work. I rub my fingers together with the oil and run them over the glue, which miraculously begins to dissolve. 

I shriek in delight, pouring more oil all over my hand and enthusiastically rid myself of the wax while Hayley snorts behind me.

Author Bio: 

I'm a Hispanic living in South Florida with my redneck husband from Texas and our "half breed" son, who is actually the reason I started writing again after years of celibacy. My son loves stories, but not the kind you can read in an existing book. No, he'd rather make up a story, complete with our own illustrations. So, thank you, Son, for igniting a flame I had let go out.

I also live with two dogs: a neurotic Border Collie we call Nitro and a midget Rottweiler named Nisa.

I have always found my sanctuary at the beach and in music and writing. I wish I could write rhymes so I could become a famous rapper, but rhyming is completely lost on me. My son surpassed me in the rhyming game by the time he was four. This is something I am very proud of.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Business Management and a Master's in Human Resource Management. I have held several jobs, from picking up dog poop to upper management positions. Review:

They have both lived through tragedy, but how a person decides to pick themselves up after that tragedy says a lot.

Ryan left the one place that shaped who he was, but like so many other tragedies in life when unresolved you are lead back until it is resolved. Liliana Delgado made one bad decision but it turned her world upside down. They have been on a collision course for years, they couldn’t help but fall in love. But was it going to save them or destroy them?

This is dark love story with adult themes and a little hard to get through. At time Ryan’s inability to come to terms with his darker side is frustrating to say the least.

Liliana is amazing and her ability to love through her pain is so heartwarming.

In the end the reader can’t help but root for Ryan and Liliana.

This is a good read with characters you want to succeed, and a love story you want to see have a happy ever after.

Review:

The Collective Protocol was a very good read, with a unique and creative concept that keeps you engaged. Brian Parker does not hesitate to jump into the action and really knows how to keep you in suspense. He has a real eye for writing action sequences and making your fear for the characters as they face trials and danger.

The only weakness in the book is character development. Multiple POV's can help a reader dive deeper into the events of the story but it hindered in the Collective Protocol. It really helped to build the suspense of the book by showing first hand what was happening, but it left little development of the main character until almost half way into the book. The story starts off very strong. It introduced Reagan and conflict early on, creating a fantastic hook, but after half a book of constant POV jumping and little focus on Reagan, it became hard to keep characters straight. The first third of the book really felt more like back story, while the true meat kicked in when Reagan's story started to develop. Despite this though, it was enjoyable to see all the different characters converge at one point of action in the book's climax.

In the end, the Collective Protocol is made up of a series of engaging events with one heck of a climax. The author doesn't balk to make the tough calls and sacrifice for suspense and storyline. I enjoyed his writing style and would recommend this book for anyone looking for an easy, enjoyable read.
